Full Job Description

Principal duties & Responsibilities

To be a highly competent, knowledgeable practitioner in the care of the elderly.

To actively participate in the Management Team.

Maintain a high standard of professional and ethical conduct.

To manage the development of the overall service plan and review the service against the plans.

To assist with the direction and supervision of the nursing service to provide a high level of resident care and management.

To provide innovative and effective leadership, support and advice to nursing and allied staff at all levels.

To provide guidance to all staff in the implementation of Centre policies.

To plan and guide daily activities to provide optimum resident care in accordance with NMBI Guidelines, Best Practice Documents for Nursing Care of Older People in Residential Care Settings and TLC Centre Policies and Procedures.

Ensure nursing staff adheres to standards and guidelines relating to professional nursing practice and behaviour.

The involvement in discussions on the provision of services, e.g. catering, cleaning and laundry services.

To undertake other relevant duties as may be determined from time to time by the Director of Nursing


Professional Responsibilities

To ensure that opportunities exist for the development of care-giving and care-management and that the care given is appropriate, reflects current research and best practice and is cost effective and resident centred.

To participate at meetings with the appropriate team, management and other senior management personnel as required.

To encourage and advise on any care-giving, care-management, nursing and associated research projects, and participate as required.

To ensure that effective safety procedures are in place to comply with the Health, Safety and Welfare at Work Act.

To assist in the development of Centre policies and procedures, the implementation of same, and to update them as required.

Ensure all Staff Nurses follow established policies relating to patient care and update policies as appropriate (i.e., Medication Administration, Care Plan Policy, Infection Control Policies)

The development of quality initiatives including clinical audit, standard setting, investigation of complaints and untoward incidents.

Ensure clinical knowledge is up to date with current practice trends and research in order to ensure staff are providing the highest standard of evidence based nursing care.

Continue to develop management skills in an effort to promote best practice amongst all employees.

Ensure the privacy, dignity and confidentiality of all residents.


Personnel

To assist in the recruitment of staff in accordance with NMBI guidelines and The Department of Trade & Enterprise guidelines.

To participate in in-service training, orientation program and appraisals of all nursing and care staff. Also to participate in nurse and care assistant training program and any other program pertaining to future development in the Centre.

To maintain good employee relations and promote good communication with all relevant staff, areas and departments.

To give support and counsel to nursing, care and allied staff as necessary and take action in accordance with agreed Centre policy, if necessary.

Foster an environment which enhances the retention of staff.


Conditions of Employment

Maintain current registration as an RGN with An NMBI.

Hepatitis vaccination will be provided. A candidate may decline vaccination through a written declination or may provide record of previous vaccination.

Attending Fire Safety training courses.


Working Conditions

Minimal physical activity requiring the handling of residents and objects.

Standing and/or walking for more that 2 hours per day.

Computer work required.



Requirements

Requirements & particulars:

Be of good character.

Be registered on the General Division of the live register maintained by NMBI.

Have not less than six years experience as a nurse; at least three of the previous six years must be in care of the elderly.

Have an interest in care of the older person.

Management experience, preferably at Clinical Nurse Manager Grade 2 level.
