Job Description

Our Consulting Unit in Dublin includes a team of economists that provides consultancy services to a range of clients in Ireland. This consultancy team currently has a vacancy for an Economic Consultant with academic training in and, ideally, practitioner experience in economic analysis and research, consultancy public service or industry capacity.
The team provides economic input into transportation and infrastructure projects. It prepares Economic Impact Assessments and Cost-Benefit Analyses, with many projects complying with the formal appraisal processes of the Public Spending Code. The team is also involved in the evaluation of public spending programmes and provides economic advice to a variety of government departments and policymakers. The team provides economic analysis and advice in wider policy issues to private and public sector clients.
Our current portfolio of works comprises a diverse mix of studies. A selection of our recent projects includes:

  • Research and evaluation advice for the Transport Infrastructure Ireland including development of aspects of their Project Appraisal Guidelines, measuring the benefits of walking and cycling infrastructure, evaluation of major projects, preparation of business cases and ad hoc advice on issues such as mainstreaming sustainability into transport schemes
  • Economics advisory services for the National Transport Authority of Ireland, including developing the business case for BusConnects and updating the Taxi Cost Index and undertaking appraisals for their Cycle Design Office
  • The preparation of business cases for Iarnród Éireann, including for some of the major rail projects being implemented in Ireland at present – Cork Area Commuter Rail and DART+
  • Socio-economic analysis for the Land Development Agency on various sites that are within their portfolio
  • A study on future skills needs for the Zero Carbon Economy, for the Department of Enterprise Trade and Employment
  • Various economic and financial appraisals for public sector projects, according to the Public Spending Code for various state entities and county councils, including for public realm improvements (Cork County Council, Limerick City and County Council), refurbishment of protected buildings (Louth County Council), master planning for the redevelopment of a site with heritage buildings (Mayo County Council), public realm and active travel infrastructure (Dublin Council, Westmeath Council), university buildings for the National University of Ireland, Primary Health Care Centre for the HSE and various buildings at the Sport Ireland Campus in Snugsborough
  • Economic analysis on tourism investment for Fáilte Ireland and appraisal of greenways

Job Responsibilities:
We are seeking a Consultant Economist with the following responsibilities:

  • Excellent writing skills, with an innate understanding of report writing that meets client’s needs – includes necessary technical descriptions, is succinct and relevant
  • Good time management and ability to work toward project completion for our clients
  • Quality focus, ensuring economic analysis are technically correct and that data management is well organised
  • Ability to source, analyse, present and communicate data, including managing datasets but also engaging stakeholders, interviewing and researching when information and data is missing
  • Managing the relationship between AECOM and clients as projects are progressed
  • Communicating the results of work to a range of audiences
  • Identifying opportunities for the AECOM economics team, and working closely with the team while contributing to bid writing and work winning
  • Collaboration with colleagues throughout AECOM to develop and realise business growth opportunities.


As an Economic Consultant  in AECOM, you would be expected to:

  • Demonstrate competence and achievement over a sustained period in this field
  • Possess technical excellence in this area and understand its contribution to the success of the firm
  • Identify trends, issues and opportunities for an economics consulting
  • Be accountable for establishing and achieving business goals
  • Source and follow up on business development leads
  • Work and collaborate with team members, helping others out and willing to ask for help when required

Minimum Requirements :

  • Public sector focus, as many of our clients are government and statutory agencies
  • Ability to convey complex economic issues to a diverse range of audiences, in a clear and concise manner
  • Strong writing and report writing skills
  • Strong analytic skills, data management and statistics, economic modelling and econometric capabilities
  • Ability to research local and regional economic issues
  • Preparation of clear, well-written,  reports based on project outcomes.
  • Degree qualification in an economics subject (e.g. economics, finance, mathematics, geography, engineering) from an accredited college or university, or overall equivalent.

Qualifications

Masters qualification in an economics subject (e.g. economics, finance, mathematics, geography, engineering) from an accredited college or university, or overall equivalent.
