In 2022, we announced our ambition to significantly reduce carbon emissions across our distilling operations at Midleton Distillery in addition to our plans to invest in a new distillery on a site adjacent to our existing operations in Midleton.

We employ over 800 people across our operations in Cork and Dublin.

About the role

We are looking for an experienced professional to join our team as a Packaging Shift Manager. In this role, you will report to the Packaging Manager. We are seeking candidates who possess the following qualities: a positive attitude towards safety and quality, strong people management skills, a mindset for continuous improvement, the ability to act as a coach and effectively manage team performance, a good financial awareness, excellent process improvement and problem-solving abilities, familiarity with lean manufacturing techniques, proficiency with computer systems, and a positive outlook.

Safety:
  • Deliver Target Zero for their assigned shift
  • Comply with and ensure compliance of their team with all health & safety standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Build a culture of Safety in packaging and not merely compliance.
  • Assume responsibility of legally appointed ‘Site Responsible Person’ who is authorised to request the attendance of external emergency services in the event of an emergency.
  • Responsible for ensuring competency of team members to operate machinery and perform all duties safely complying with legislation and site standards and procedures.
  • Owner for all shift risk assessments.
  • Owns the change process for their area of responsibility.
  • Responsible for ensuring all accident and Incident investigations on their shift are carried out in a timely and professional manner.
  • Audit all safety and audit documentation.
  • Respond to accidents/incidents in a timely and professional manner. Completing all necessary documentation and reports.
  • Be point of contact for permit writing in area and see permits through from writing to closure.
Quality
  • Ensure highest quality standards are adhered
  • Work with QA Manager to agree and communicate quality standards across packaging
  • Drive adherence to standards across the shift
  • Continuously drive people to identify and address quality issues
  • Audit all quality checks and documentation on a regular basis
People
  • Deliver through people
  • Through the recruitment process work to build diverse teams
  • Manage shift resources, allocate duties and deploy team members to meet day-to-day production requirements
  • Responsible for ensuring competency of all direct reports and identifying and closing any skills/proficiency gaps.
  • Set clear measurable objectives for direct reports at start of each financial year and manage to deliver
  • Coaching and mentoring direct reports
  • Embrace and deliver a competitive & collaborative high-performance team mindset
  • Act promptly to address any performance or discipline issues.
  • Develop good working relationships with key stakeholders and customers, ensuring SLA’s and ways of working are agreed and documented.
  • Manage the transition to technical operator of all current packaging operators
  • Ensure comprehensive and effective change management processes in place and communicated

  • Monitor line performance, identify trends and ensure that waste reduction and process improvement goals are identified, understood and executed by team.

  • Participate in and lead as required improvement projects using the DMAIC methodology.   
  • Drive adherence to 5s standards across the shift
  • Responsible for implementing all appropriate lean XO tools. 
Daily Operations
  • Ensure team KPI’s are aligned with site KPI’s and drive delivery.
  • Ensures team understands their KPI’s and their role in delivery.
  • Monitor all shift performance and report on same
  • Lead the cross functional Tier 2 ensuring engagement of all stakeholders
  • Support the development of comprehensive work instructions for all equipment and ensure all operators are trained on same
  • Manage budget to deliver value for money and cost savings where required
  • Maintain a visible presence on the production floor.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Experience leading a team and strong understanding of how to develop a high performing team.
  • Third level degree
  • BEngTech / HCEng / City and Guilds (Mech, Elec, Mnf) preferable  
  • Lean or lean six sigma green belt.
  • Experienced in the use data analysis to drive performance and problem solve.
  • At ease with the use of applications (MS Office, etc.) and business systems (e.g. SAP).
  • Understanding of asset performance and maintenance philosophy.
  • Ability to act as a trusted coach, manage performance and enable the development of assigned team.
  • Strong financial awareness, understanding of business drivers, budgeting processes.
  • Excellent process improvement and problem- solving skills.
  • Understanding of lean manufacturing excellence techniques.
  • Computer literate.
  • Strong numerical and verbal reasoning.
