Research Assistant in Quantum Devices

Contract: Full Time/Fixed Term

Tyndall National Institute

Tyndall National Institute is a leading European research centre in integrated ICT (Information and Communications Technology) hardware and systems, specialising in both electronics and photonics – materials, devices, circuits and systems.

Research Assistant Role

There is a current vacancy for a Research Assistant to join the Quantum Electronic Devices group at Tyndall. The role involves characterisation of quantum materials and devices from April to July 2024.

The aim is to gain a better knowledge of 2D materials for applications in novel electronics, in terms of physical and electrical properties, as well developing key technological steps of 2D materials device fabrication. More specifically, the overall objective of the work is to characterise 2D materials and devices, fabricated from MoS2.

It is targeted to extract parameters associated with the electrical properties of the MoS2 layers, such as contact and sheet resistance, as well as the structural properties such as layer uniformity and crystal structure via Atomic Force Microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy.

The additional need to perform structural and electrical characterisation on other semiconductor quantum devices may also arise.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform structural characterisation of quantum materials and devices
  • Examine the electrical properties of quantum materials
  • Electrical characterisation of devices and parameter extraction
  • Prepare and deliver of technical presentations and written reports

Other responsibilities

  • Participate in Education and Public Engagement (EPE) activities, as required
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system and with the required Health and Safety standards
  • Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post

Essential Criteria

  • BSc or BEng in Materials Science, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Experience in characterisation of semi-conductor devices using the tools listed above, or similar.
  • Prior internships or experience in related projects.
  • Good communication, writing, organisation and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in English.
  • A commitment to personal development.

Desirable Criteria
  • Qualification at MSc or MEng is preferable.
  • Preparation of scientific reports.
  • Prior experience in operation of the following characterisation tools (or equivalent):
    • Cascade Semiautomatic Prober (Model: Summit 11000)
    • Semiconductor Device Analyzer (Model: B1500A, EasyEXPERT group+ software)
    • Scanning Electron Microscope (Model: Carl Zeiss Supra 40 by Oxford Instruments)
    • SEM/FIB (Model: FEI Helios NanoLab 600i Dual Beam)
    • EDS-SEM Materials Characterisation System (Model: AZtec by Oxford Instruments)

The appointment will be made on the IUA Scale for Research Assistant €30,025-€39,908 pa. In all instances the successful appointment will be at the first point of the scale.

Informal enquiries can be made in confidence to Dr. Giorgos Fagas ([email protected] )
