Role specific requirements

·         Actively participate in and promote continuing education and research activities consistent with the position.

·         Demonstrate behaviour consistent with the values of the Hospital and the relevant University.

·    Promote open communications throughout the Hospital and the relevant University.

·         Report to the Physiotherapy Manager in Charge III but will also have strong links with the Head of the School of Physiotherapy for RCSI or UCD

·         Supervision of clinical education of students in collaboration with senior and staff physiotherapists in all appropriate clinical areas

·         Liaison with the University and hospital colleagues regarding rostering of students at the clinical site and act as a resource person for all clinical placements.

·         Local co-ordination of students at the clinical site including orientation.

·         Agreement of learning contracts / placement objectives for students at the start of each placement and facilitation of students to achieve these goals.

·         Organisation of a planned programme of relevant tutorials, group and peer learning activities for students while on placement.

·  Explanation of the role of the post to staff at the beginning of each academic year with regular review meetings.

·         Provision of intermediate and final feedback to students about their performance in conjunction with the supervising physiotherapists.

·         Assessment of student performance, awarding of grade in accordance with the University guidelines in conjunction with supervising physiotherapists.

·         Provision of support to senior and staff grade personnel who engage in clinical education in terms of mentoring and the organization of CPD activities related to education and evidence-based practice.

·         Analyse quality of service provision through regular feedback from stakeholders and audits.

·         Work closely with the other clinical teacher(s) on site and in the relevant University.

·         Contribution to and attendance at clinical education workshops and training days organized by the relevant University.

In conjunction with the School of Physiotherapy

·       Development of clinical education curricula in collaboration with staff at the University, with the aim of integrating theory into practice and fostering evidence-based practice.

·         Organisation of clinical education courses for new and established clinical educators in conjunction with the clinical teachers office in the School of Physiotherapy.

·         Attend regular clinical teacher meetings in the School of Physiotherapy.

·         Contribution to a professional clinical education network in conjunction with the Universities and the Professional Body to include the development and roll out of innovative learning methodologies, common assessment criteria and benchmarking standards for clinical placement for example.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Operational

The Senior Physiotherapist will:

·         In collaboration with the physiotherapy team, be responsible for developing, organising, implementing and evaluating the physiotherapy service in the Beaumont Hospital

·         Contribute to service provision planning and delivery of care across the broad physiotherapy team, with specific focus on service provision within own physiotherapy service.

·         Ensure a safe working environment for patients and staff at all times, and read and act upon all issued staff policies.

·         Assess and manage risk in their assigned area(s) of responsibility.

·         Take the appropriate timely action to manage any incidents or near misses within their assigned area(s).

·         Report any deficiency/danger in any aspect of the service to the team or Physiotherapy Manager as appropriate.

·         Be accountable for the budget, where relevant.

·         To provide expert advice and guidance for other healthcare professionals, patients and carers.

·         To carry a caseload of patients who have been referred to the Physiotherapy Department.

·         The post holder will attend relevant departmental and multidisciplinary meetings and will be involved in strategic planning for patients referred to the Physiotherapy Department.

·         Ensure that the Physiotherapy Manager is informed on an on-going basis about matters, clinical and otherwise, affecting the running of the specialist area.

·         Record clinical and non-clinical activity data for the service, and submit monthly data reports as stipulated by the physiotherapy manager. It is also necessary to prepare an annual service plan and service report to be submitted to the physiotherapy manager.

Professional

The Senior Physiotherapist will:

·         Ensure that a high standard of physiotherapy assessment and treatment is provided for all patients within his/her area of responsibility.

·         Demonstrate evidence based practice through the process of clinical reasoning and decision making, allowing knowledge to be applied to complex/different situations.

·         Ensure that all requests for physiotherapy treatment within his/her speciality are allocated to appropriate staff, and liaise with relevant medical staff for maximum effectiveness of treatment, discharge and follow up.

·         Contribute to business planning and business cases.

·         Take a lead role in service development as relevant to role.

·         Liaise with staff of other disciplines in providing multi-disciplinary services for certain groups of patients.

·         Participate and be a lead clinician as appropriate in review meetings, case conferences etc.

·         Liaise with services outside the hospital to provide continuing care for patients. 

·    Provide a service in varied locations in line with local policy/guidelines  and within appropriate time allocation (e.g. clinic, home visits)

·         Comply with the delivery of standards in the assessment, treatment and management of patients in line with international best practice guidelines.

·         Work within own scope of professional competence in line with principles of best practice, professional conduct and clinical governance.

·         Promote a culture that values diversity and respect in the workplace.

Education and Research

The Senior Physiotherapist will:

·         Participate in mandatory training programmes

·         Manage, participate and play a key role in the practice education of student therapists in partnership with universities and clinical educators.

·      Teach, advise and supervise junior staff including participation in in-service training.

·         Participate in teaching programmes for other professionals and ancillary staff.

·   Lead, promote and ensure clinical effectiveness of the physiotherapy  service through performance management, education, audit and research

·         Be a resource of speciality advice within the hospital.

·         Take responsibility for, and keep up to date with physiotherapy practice by participating in continuing professional development such as reflective practice, in service, self-directed learning, research, clinical audit etc.

The Senior Physiotherapist will:

·         Work collaboratively with other physiotherapists, medical, nursing and other health and social care professionals across the acute and community services in providing optimal clinical care and in further developing the service.

·         Establish links with other organisations, both national and international where appropriate, providing support and information regarding this clinical area, and utilising these additional resources where necessary, to benefit patient care.

·         Work with the Physiotherapy Manager in ensuring co-ordination, development and delivery of high quality, client centred physiotherapy service.

•Senior Physiotherapist will report to Physiotherapy Manager in Charge III for physiotherapy clinical governance, attendance and service performance management.

Selection Criteria: 

Selection criteria outline the qualifications, skills, knowledge and/or experience that the successful candidate would need to demonstrate for successful discharge of the responsibilities of the post. 

Applications will be assessed on the basis of how well candidates satisfy these criteria.

Mandatory:

1.       Statutory Registration, Professional Qualifications, Experience, etc
(a) Candidates for appointment must:

(i) Hold a Physiotherapy qualification recognised by the Physiotherapists Registration Board at CORU.

AND

(ii) Be registered on the Physiotherapists Register maintained by the Physiotherapists Registration Board at CORU.

OR

(iii) Applicants who satisfy the conditions set out in Section 91 of the Health and Social Care Professionals Act 2005, (see note 1 below*), must submit proof of application for registration with the Physiotherapists Registration Board at CORU. The acceptable proof is correspondence from the Physiotherapists Registration Board at CORU confirming their application for registration as a Section 91 applicant.

AND

Candidates must have three years full time (or an aggregate of three years full time) post qualification clinical experience.

AND

Have the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability and professional ability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.

2.      Annual registration

(i) On appointment, practitioners must maintain annual registration on Physiotherapists Register maintained by the Physiotherapists Registration Board at CORU.

AND

(ii) Practitioners must confirm annual registration with CORU to the HSE by way of the annual Patient Safety Assurance Certificate (PSAC).

3.      Health
Candidates for and any person holding the office must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the office and be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.

4.       Character
Candidates for and any person holding the office must be of good character

5.       Role Suitability
Demonstrate a proven record of clinical /academic achievement including continuing development in this specialist field.

6.       Additional Skills
Be available to work on call rota for respiratory and orthopaedic services as required by physiotherapy management and have the necessary training at undergraduate level.

Desirable:

• 6 months relevant experience in acute hospital setting
• Further training (e.g. M.Sc.) in relevant clinical area
• Previous senior grade experience in the acute hospital setting
