**Introduction**
We are delighted to offer an opening for a 4-year paid (salary + full fees) PhD position in the area of artificial intelligence (AI) as part of an ongoing initiative between IBM Research and Trinity College Dublin (Trinity). You will be employed by IBM Research Dublin and registered for a PhD at Trinity College Dublin (School of Engineering) with supervision from Trinity faculty and IBM staff.
The selected student is expected to work on the ECOTWIN Horizon Europe project on advancing generalisable digital-twin methods. Focus areas include knowledge- and causal-graph-grounded LLM agents tightly integrated with complex simulators and data-driven models. The aim is trustworthy, decision-grade planning across domains.
**Your role and responsibilities**
Example research directions:
-Design LLM agents whose planning and tool-use are guided/guardrailed by expert-defined or discovered knowledge graphs - either augmenting discovered relations with LLMs or constraining retrieval, reasoning and action selection via the KG.
-Couple LLM agents to complex simulators and data-driven models: propose scenarios, generate code/parameters, call surrogates, and trigger high-fidelity runs when warranted.
-Develop an evaluation harness and metrics beyond standard NLP (e.g., causal consistency, goal-directed planning under KG constraints, sample efficiency, robustness to shift, cost/latency).
-Release a reproducible benchmark suite and, where feasible, a public challenge.
-Leverage simulation-derived synthetic data and retrieval-augmented generation; explore alignment (preference optimisation / lightweight RL) with causal/KG-aware reward signals.

About the Role

Machine Learning Engineers at Rent the Runway create data products that impact customer experience and internal operations. You will own projects end to end-from framing problems to transforming information from our data ecosystem into actionable insights, and ultimately building & integrating algorithms into our network of services in collaboration with product and software engineering teams.

The Red Hat OpenShift AI team is looking for a Principal Machine Learning Engineer with Kubernetes and MLOps (Machine Learning Operations) experience to join our rapidly growing engineering team. In this role, you will provide key leadership to a talented team of engineers, contributing directly to projects such as Kubeflow, Ray and MLFlow with a primary focus on delivering fine tuning capabilities across the Red Hat AI product portfolio. **What you will do**
+ Play a key leadership role within a talented group of engineers, working closely with staff engineers and architects to outline a vision and roadmap for the training and experimentation stack in **OpenShift AI**
+ Work closely with the AI Innovation team to help deliver **LLM training** , continual learning and reinforcement learning techniques across our product portfolio
+ Embrace an upstream first mindset to help our teams become more influential in MLOps focused communities such as **Kubeflow**
+ Liaise with stakeholder groups and cross-functional teams to deliver new product features
+ Ensure non-functional requirements including security, resiliency, and maintainability are met
+ Use **CI/CD best practices** to deliver solutions as productization efforts into **OpenShift AI**
+ Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement by sharing recommendations and technical knowledge with team members
+ Collaborate with product management, other engineering and cross-functional teams to analyze and clarify business requirements
+ Communicate effectively to stakeholders and team members to ensure proper visibility of development efforts
+ Give thoughtful and prompt code reviews
+ Represent **OpenShift AI** in external engagements including industry events, customer meetings, and open source communities

+ Advanced experience in **Python and Go**
+ Advanced experience developing applications in **Kubernetes, OpenShift,** or other **cloud-native technologies**

+ Experience with distributed systems (especially those that run on Kubernetes) and **troubleshooting** them

+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills
+ A willingness to proactively **utilize AI-assisted development tools** such as **Cursor** and **Claude Code** for code generation, auto-completion, and intelligent suggestions to accelerate development cycles and enhance code quality.
+ Open to exploring and experimenting with emerging **AI technologies** relevant to software development, proactively identifying opportunities to incorporate new AI capabilities into existing workflows and tooling
+ Ability to define and scale testing, automation, and reproducibility standards across ML systems
**The following will be considered a plus:**
+ While a Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or a related discipline is valued, we prioritize practical experience and technical prowess
+ Understanding of how **Open Source** communities work
+ Experience working with **upstream communities**
+ Familiarity or experience with the **MLOps lifecycle** , with an emphasis on **model training**
+ Experience writing **Kubernetes/OpenShift controllers and operators**
