Abbott Nutrition produces a range of infant formulae in all pack sizes under the brand name “Similac”. To complement the range of “Similac” infant formulae, the facility also manufactures a range of follow on formulae under the brand name of “Gain”. The essential ingredient is liquid skim milk and this is combined with carbohydrate, vegetable oils, vitamins and minerals. The product is blended, pasteurised, dried and packaged at the site and once packaged, is distributed to Europe, South East Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and Canada.
Established in 1975, Abbott Nutrition in Ireland is the largest powder manufacturing facility for the production of infant formulae within the Abbott Corporation worldwide. Approximately 1,000 dairy farms in Ireland and Northern Ireland supply quality milk to the Cootehill facility which processes 500,000 litres per day. The role of Senior Automation Engineer will involve the following
PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
This is a senior role accountable for helping to develop and implement a robust Automation strategy across the site. Working with the Site Engineering Manager and Divisional Engineering the role will co-ordinate inputs from all Site functions, IT, sister sites, Vendors along with automation SMEs here in Cootehill to implement appropriate solutions and investments required to execute against same.
This is a key role that will require excellent stakeholder management and influencing skills, and will interact with all levels of the organisation, ensuring competing priorities are managed objectively and in line with the overall business strategy.
Responsibilities
- Operational Technology Strategy & Roadmap:
- Give input to develop and maintain the OT Strategy and Roadmap for the site including Industry 4.0 and Smart Factory (digital) opportunities.
- Use detailed technical / systems standards that support the OT strategy, employing Best Available Technology.
- Foster a standardised approach to automation across all areas of the site
- OT Project Governance:
- Ensure projects involving OT elements are aligned with the site strategy and business needs.
- Ensure that Third Party Suppliers, System Integrators and Service providers follow our OT standards.
- Evaluation of Technical solution designs, execution / delivery, commissioning, and validation.
- OT Lifecycle Management:
- Accountable for the lifecycle management of all O/T infrastructure, applications & support services.
- Develop and implement a process for Retain, Retire and Replacement of automation applications.
- Responsible for the maintenance, compliance, and availability of the OT systems
- OT Team
- Develop the skills and capabilities of automation engineers to best meet present and future site needs around operations support and projects.
- Work closely with peers in the Plant network to ensure Cootehill is aligned with best practices across the network.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree (preferably in Engineering or Computer Science) is required with 5+ years of business working experience in a technology function in operations / manufacturing environment .
- Experience in the delivery and management of automated systems in addition to a working knowledge of GAMP software development lifecycle, ANSI/ISA-S88, S95 and PackML industry standards.
- Experience dealing with a large portfolio of systems, projects and initiatives in the areas of Information Systems, Automation and Operations.
- Candidates will have worked on automation systems in cGMP regulated manufacturing environments, and will be knowledgeable regarding FDA cGxP and 21 CFR Part 11 regulations, and understand software system validation in this context, is desired.
- Experience with Siemens PLCs, SCADA systems, and OSIsoft Pi Data Historians is desired
- Project Management skills required.
- People Management Experience, although not essential is preferred.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities
- Implement and oversee the quality systems ensuring compliance with all relevant regulatory guidelines and Jazz policies and strategies.

- Support the facility Supplier Management program, including qualifications and re-qualifications of suppliers and materials, auditing vendors and providing oversight as required.
- Manage the QA responsibilities of external manufacturers of APIs, reviewing deviations and changes at the CMO site.
- Support site compliance program, performing internal audits, training internal auditors as required, and implementing audit action plans.
- Participate and follow-up in third party audits and/or inspections carried out at the site by the authorities or clients.
- Complete all required QMS assignments (CAPAs, investigations, actions etc) in accordance with agreed timelines.
- Perform production on the line AQLs, and the incoming inspection and disposition of raw materials, consumables, packaging.
- Assist in preparation and presentation of GMP training programmes.
- Participate in initiatives and action plans for the development of QA and improvement of GMP compliance.
- Involved in site-wide projects and continuous improvement processes.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- 3-7 years experience working in finished product pharmaceutical / biologics manufacturing, including analytical chemistry, quality assurance, quality control, development, and /or manufacturing areas.
- Excellent working knowledge of quality systems, FDA and EU regulations, cGMPs and ICH guidelines.
- Demonstrated capability in establishing collaborative working relationships at all levels, regardless of seniority.
- Possess fundamental scientific thought processes and demonstrated ability to apply this to overcome problems. An ability to think strategically and be a ‘go-to’ expert across the business in area of expertise.

This is a 50-hour per week contract on a flexible ‘any 5 from 7 ’ shift pattern. Our site runs 24/7, so we offer a variety of start times—these can be discussed during your application.
Pay, benefits and more:
- New employee bonus of £00 , paid in two instalments
- Average salary of circa £ ,000 which includes:
- Hourly rate of £ .97 ,
- Overtime paid at £ .14 per hour,
- Additional premiums for specific working hours :
£1.64 xtra per hour for hours worked between 06:00 and 07:00
£2.47 xtra per hour for hours worked between 18:00 and 22:00
£3.06 tra per hour for hours worked between 22:00 and 06:00

What you’ll do on a typical day:
- Deliver multi-temperature goods to Iceland stores on a multi-drop route, handling cages and pallets safely and efficiently
- Support with loading and unloading, and make sure empty cages and pallets are returned to the site
- Work independently and as part of a team to quickly resolve any delivery issues that come up
- Provide excellent customer service by engaging professionally with store staff and following all company policies and procedures
What you need to succeed at GXO:
- A full UK driving licence with C+E entitlement
- No more than 6 points on your licence, with no DD, DR, DG, BA, CD, AC, LC or TT endorsements
- Ability to provide 28 days of tachograph records
- Commitment to safety and compliance with driving regulations
