Job Description

Initially available on a fixed-term basis, with the intention of becoming a permanent position, this opportunity is for an Ecologist working on rail projects. Hybrid work in supported.

Operating from within the civil engineering department, the team ensures that engineering work is carried out whilst protecting the natural environment, biodiversity and ecological areas of interest, adhering to legislation, including the Wildlife (Amendment Act This act stipulates that the company must report on measures implemented to achieve the goals and targets set of the Biodiversity Plan,

The Ecologist will offer specialist support for ecological management and biodiversity, ensuring the organisation's compliance with legislation.

The role:

  • Perform ecological surveys (aquatic and terrestrial), preparing Appropriate Assessment Screening for railway maintenance work
  • Create and implement ecological improvement initiatives that will enhance biodiversity along the rail network
  • Help to develop vegetation management plans
  • Liaise with relevant stakeholders, external ecological consultants and groups with an interest in biodiversity and ecology, such as Birdwatch Ireland
  • Prepare the company's report, highlighting progress in meeting the requirements of the Biodiversity Plan and the Wildlife (Amendment) Act, 2023
  • Give training and talks to all staff, including engineers and patrollers, on ecological and biodiversity best practices
  • Maintain an Invasive Species database that includes an action plan for their eradication
  • Help to assess environmental complaints as a result of maintenance works, such as noise pollution
  • Work closely with local authorities and statutory bodies regarding railway maintenance programme
  • Measure and deliver on progress meeting biodiversity targets set out in the company's sustainability strategy
  • Make sure all work is planned safely and in accordance with company policies and legislative requirements

Requirements:

  • Degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, Environmental Biology or a related discipline
  • Membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) or related body
  • Driving licence
  • Post-graduate experience in an Ecologist role
  • Experience of biodiversity and ecological management plans
  • Experience in the implementation of ecological measures

Our Ecology Team currently has a need for an Ecologist. The role will be based in Boora and will report to the Ecology Manager. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing ecology and biodiversity support and services to BnM Renewable Energy projects and BnM peatland rehabilitation, promoting best practise, cost effectiveness and continuous improvement.

The main duties and responsibilities of the role will include the following:


• Provide general ecological support to the Planning Team on Renewable Energy Projects. This will include baseline ecological survey of cutaway bogs to contribute to the BnM ecology baseline dataset and inform constraints datasets for project design, updating site specific rehabilitation plans for inclusion in the EIAR, review of design iterations and proposed mitigation / enhancement measures from an ecology / ornithology perspective.


• Proactively support data management and the maintenance and development of various internal databases.


• Support the delivery of the Environmental Impact Assessment Report and Appropriate Assessment/Natura Impact Statement for the proposed development.


• Liaise with project 3rd party consultants with respect to cutover and raised bog habitat mapping, ecological support, engagement with relevant stakeholders, reviewing reports, participating in meetings and data management.


• Provide ecological expertise and support in relation to the delivery of other Renewable Energy projects across the wider Renewable Energy business from site feasibility through to project inception and delivery.


• Develop and update site-specific EPA rehabilitation plans and NPWS packages as part of the Peatland Climate Action Scheme and any other rehabilitation schemes that BnM may be involved.


• Deliver other PCAS requirements (stakeholder consultation and management, liaising with NPWS staff, data management, Monitoring and Verification, habitat surveys, bird surveys, other ecological surveys, GIS mapping, liaison and support of other BnM PCAS staff, AA screening and NIS support).


• Support any statutory and legal reporting obligations such as AER's and the communication and agreement of bog rehabilitation plans with the EPA.


• Support other BnM peatland rehabilitation projects and assist in the delivery of the company's Biodiversity Action Plan. Engage with internal BnM stakeholders to consult on and raise awareness of the BnM Biodiversity Action Plan. Identify new projects that will facilitate delivery of the BnM biodiversity objective.


• Keep abreast of changes in ecology/environmental legislation, policy decisions and updates to national, regional and local authority development plans to inform Business Strategy, to ensure compliance with Planning and Environmental requirements, and maximise outcomes for the company.


• Assist the Community Engagement and Stakeholder Engagement teams as required with respect to communications and consultation with local communities and other relevant stakeholders including statutory and non-statutory consultees.


• Work as part of the BnM Ecology Team. Proactively participate in team meetings, in the preparation of weekly Team updates and status reports, time management reporting, data management, and the recording and reporting of key performance indicators. Liaise with and support other BnM staff, where needed.

• Proactively participate in the Performance Management process to ensure delivery of own, and the wider team's, objectives.

The Person

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualification, skills, knowledge and attributes:

  • Level 8+ qualification in ecology or related scientific subject or equivalent.
  • Minimum 5 years relevant experience.
  • Experience in digital capturing of data using GPS tablets, processing and manipulation of survey data.
  • Proficient in ecological surveying, habitat and species identification, specific species surveys.
  • Experience in ecological surveying, report writing, peatland habitats and delivery of renewable energy projects desirable.
  • Proficient in MS Word, MS Excel, MS Project and GIS (ArcGIS).
  • A full clean driving licence is required for the role.
  • Excellent communications skills.
  • Experience in peatland species and habitats highly desirable.

  • Experience conducting and reporting on a variety of ecological surveys (e.g. habitat, mammal, bird, and bat).
  • Familiarity with Irish and EU wildlife legislation and ecological survey guidelines.
  • Proven ability to write detailed, accurate, and well-structured reports.
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Comfortable working both independently and as part of a team.
  • Physically fit and comfortable working outdoors in a range of weather conditions and during unsociable hours when necessary.
  • Full clean EU driver's license and access to a vehicle.

Desirable:

  • Membership (or eligibility for membership) of CIEEM or another relevant professional body.
  • Experience of ecological project coordination and/or supervising junior staff.
  • Experience using QGIS, ArcGIS, or similar GIS tools.
  • Familiarity with AA screening and Natura Impact Statement preparation.

MWP requires a Senior Ecologist, experienced in working with Environmental and Engineering teams, preferably in the consultancy sector. The position would suit a motivated, practical, and adaptable individual who has the ambition to work within a progressive and innovative team, providing advice and solutions to clients, in conjunction with the wider MWP team.

You'll be joining a 12-person team with a mix of backgrounds and skills. We primarily work in the areas of renewable energy, large infrastructure and structural projects and/or coastal and marine development.

Overview of Main Responsibilities:

  • Planning and undertaking both multidisciplinary ecological walkover surveys and targeted ecological surveys.
  • Preparing survey reports and/or impact assessments for planning and/or post-planning stage development.
  • Preparation of Biodiversity chapters for EIARs.
  • Formulation of AA Screening reports and Natura Impact Statements.

Skills/Requirements:

  • Degree in Ecology or Science equivalent.
  • MSc preferable.

  • Membership of a professional body, working towards Chartership.
  • Strong technical report-writing, impact assessment and report review skills.
  • Experience of Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA), writing Biodiversity chapters for EIARs, and Appropriate Assessment (Stage 1 and 2).
  • Robust fieldwork skills and ability to coordinate and manage field survey work. The ideal candidate will have at least one area of specialism, such as aquatics (marine/freshwater), bats, mammals, habitats/flora, birds etc.
  • Ability to manage ecology projects from initiation through to completion and liaise with clients and relevant stakeholders.
  • Experience in design of mitigation strategies for development projects.
  • Firm knowledge of ecological survey and impact assessment guidelines in Ireland (and UK where relevant) and Irish and European guidance and legislation relevant to planning and development.
  • Willingness to support/mentor junior staff.
  • Full driver's license and access to own vehicle
  • Willingness to work flexible hours for fieldwork purposes when required, i.e. travel within Ireland and overnight stays.

Due to continued growth and expansion of our ecology work in Ireland, SLR are looking for a professional senior ecologist to join our successful ecology team based in Cork or Dublin (hybrid working available).

You will be joining a highly professional, international multidisciplinary environmental consultancy with an established and well-respected presence in Ireland and the UK.

The role
Duties Will Be Varied But Will Include

  • Managing and overseeing ecological aspects of projects, advising clients on schemes such as mixed use and residential developments, minerals/waste projects, infrastructure and energy projects
  • Preparation of fee proposals and scope of works, report writing and technical review of peer and sub-contractor reports
  • Supervision and mentoring of junior ecologists, which may also include staff management and leading work on particular ecological specialisms
  • Scheduling, managing, and ensuring delivery of ecological survey work packages on time and budget, using in-house and occasionally sub-contractor staff
  • Liaising with other SLR technical teams on a variety of subjects including planning, landscape, hydrology, noise and air quality whilst working closely with senior members of the ecology team in other SLR offices, both in Ireland and overseas

The role will involve working with other team members located across Ireland and may require short-term travel throughout the island of Ireland and potentially overseas, depending on client/project sites.

About You
Our ideal candidate would be likely to have an ecological specialism, whether it is habitat survey, protected species, ornithology or another skill.
