Role Purpose
The Assistant News Editor will play a pivotal role in managing the daily news cycle across Sunday World and Crime World platforms. This position supports the delivery of high-quality, engaging journalism across digital and print, ensuring editorial excellence, operational efficiency, and audience growth.
Key Responsibilities
- News Desk Operations:
Support the News Editor in managing day-to-day editorial output, including story selection, assignment coordination, and deadline management. - Content Oversight:
Edit and review news articles for clarity, accuracy, tone, and legal compliance. Ensure all content meets professional and ethical standards. - Digital & Print Integration
: Work across both platforms, contributing to the transition from Desk to CUE and supporting multi-format publishing workflows . - Team Collaboration:
Liaise with reporters, production journalists, audience editors, and podcast producers to ensure cohesive editorial output. - Forward Planning:
Assist in developing long-term editorial strategies, including premium content planning and signature journalism initiatives. - Audience Engagement:
Collaborate with the Audience Team to optimise story presentation and distribution across social media, newsletters, and homepage features. - Editorial Meetings:
Participate in weekly steerco sessions and content workshops to align editorial priorities with business goals.
Skills & Experience
- Proven experience in a newsroom or editorial environment, ideally within crime or tabloid journalism.
- Strong editorial judgement and attention to detail.
- Excellent writing, editing, and communication skills.
- Familiarity with digital publishing tools (e.g., Atex, CUE).
- Ability to work under pressure and manage competing deadlines.
- Understanding of media law, defamation, and journalistic ethics.
- Flexible availability, including evenings and weekends as required.
Desirable Attributes
- Experience in crime reporting or investigative journalism.
- Knowledge of audience analytics and SEO best practices.
- Ability to mentor junior reporters and contribute to talent development.
- Interest in podcasting and multimedia storytelling.
