Position:
Senior Data Systems & Analytics Specialist

Qualification:

Location:
Dundalk, Co. Louth, Ireland

Contract Type:
Fixed Term (Open to applications from self employed/independent contractors)

About XOCEAN

XOCEAN is an ocean data company – we collect data for clients ranging from mapping the seabed to monitoring the environment. However, we do this differently, instead of using conventional crewed survey ships, we have developed a marine robotic system known as an Uncrewed Surface Vessel (USV).

Overview

We are looking for a
Senior Data Systems & Analyst
to cover maternity leave for the Senior Manager, Data Systems. This role is offered on a fixed term contract basis and we are open to applications also from self-employed/independent contractors. This person will take ownership of high-priority workflows, coordinate cross-functional teams, and maintain the technical backbone supporting XOCEAN's marine data lifecycle — from project bid to delivery, including automation, quality checks, ML-ready pipelines, and governance.

You must be comfortable operating independently in a fast-paced environment, juggling urgent requests, managing a team, managing data pipelines, deploying cloud-based solutions, and maintaining standards across systems and teams.

This is a strategic and hands-on role with broad exposure to Python, Power BI, AWS, Azure, data governance, marine operations data, and cross-team collaboration.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

Technical & Automation

  • Maintain and enhance end-to-end data pipelines connecting SharePoint (Excel), Azure SQL, AWS S3, and internal systems.
  • Implement and optimize automation via Power Automate, PowerShell, and Python scripts for file handling, syncing, and logging.
  • Build robust Power BI dashboards with advanced DAX, measures, and direct query models to support real-time operations, shift analysis, and forecasts.
  • Handle versioning, syncing, and validation logic for live vs historical datasets, addressing schema changes and duplication issues.
  • Own and improve data availability, data reliability, and shift-based scheduling logic for visualizations and reporting.

Cloud & Infrastructure

  • Manage integrations across AWS S3, Azure Data Lake, and SQL environments.
  • Lead troubleshooting and remediation of sync failures, permission/auth issues, and log discrepancies across file-based and cloud-based sources.

Data Governance & Standards

  • Enforce data management best practices, including standardized naming, lifecycle rules, and metadata tagging across survey, sensor, and operational projects.
  • Ensure compliance with internal governance frameworks and align data flows with business-critical milestones (e.g. survey kickoff, closeout, QA reviews).

Project & Team Coordination

  • Coordinate across teams (Survey, Commercial, Data Processing, ML) to ensure data readiness, validation tracking, and automation continuity.
  • Serve as standby escalation point during mission-critical survey periods, with the ability to step into cross-department coordination roles.
  • Contribute to roadmap planning for in-house ML model deployment, QA analytics, and usage monitoring tools.

Requirements: Essential Skills / Attributes and Experience

  • 12-15 years in a senior tech role, analytics engineering, or data platform role.
  • Strong coding proficiency in Python, SQL, PowerShell, and Power Query.
  • Hands-on experience with Power BI (complex measures, dynamic slicers, time-based analysis).
  • Deep working knowledge of AWS (S3, permissions, sync) and Azure (SQL, Data Factory or Logic Apps).
  • Experience building and maintaining automated workflows for structured/unstructured data.
  • Proven experience with data governance implementation, QA workflows, and operational reporting.
  • Capable of independently driving initiatives and handling escalations with urgency and context.
  • Familiarity with marine data, sensor logs, geospatial processing, or time-series analysis is a strong advantage.

Desirable Experience

  • Exposure to ML lifecycle (feature pipeline, model integration).
  • Experience working in survey, marine, energy, or offshore project environments.
  • Proficiency in building and maintaining SharePoint-integrated workflows.

Why Join Us?

  • Be part of an innovative company transforming the marine data industry.
  • Work on cutting-edge automation and data analytics projects.
  • Collaborative and technology-driven work environment.
  • Opportunity to grow into advanced analytics and ML roles.

Apply

  • Applicants must demonstrate how they meet the essential criteria. Desirable criteria may be used for further shortlisting.
