Job Description
Deliver safe, evidence-based nursing care to patients before, during, and after endoscopic procedures.
Prepare and maintain endoscopy rooms and equipment in accordance with infection control and hospital standards.
Assist the endoscopist and anaesthetist during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, ensuring patient safety and comfort.
Monitor and assess patients’ clinical status throughout the endoscopy process, responding promptly to any deterioration.
Participate in the safe administration and monitoring of conscious sedation under appropriate supervision.
Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive nursing documentation while adhering to NMBI standards and hospital policies.
Provide patient-centred care by ensuring privacy, dignity, and clear communication before and after procedures.
Collaborate effectively with consultants, anaesthetists, and the multidisciplinary team to ensure seamless care and patient flow.
Adhere to infection prevention, clinical governance, and health and safety guidelines, participating in audits and quality improvement initiatives.
Engage in continuous professional development, reflective practice, and support the training of new staff and students within the Endoscopy Unit.
RequirementsRegistered, or eligible for registration, in the relevant division of the Register of Nurses & Midwives maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
Minimum of 3 years’ post-registration full-time experience (or equivalent), including at least 1 year in the relevant speciality or related area.
Demonstrated clinical and administrative capacity to effectively perform the duties of the role.
Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
Must maintain live annual registration with NMBI and confirm it annually via the Patient Safety Assurance Certificate (PSAC).
Must be fully competent and in good health, capable of undertaking the duties of the role.
Minimum of 1 year’s post-registration experience in an acute hospital setting.
Experience in endoscopy or theatre nursing is desirable.
Up-to-date Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) desirable.
Demonstrated clinical competence and a strong commitment to evidence-based practice.

A Peri Operative staff nurse may be assigned to any area within Anaesthetics, Scrub, Circulating, Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU) or Endoscopy within their scope of practice.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Professional Responsibilities
- Nurses are expected to practice according to the Code of Professional Conduct as laid down by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland and Professional Clinical Guidelines.
- Adhere at all times to the Nursing Board code for nurses and ensure that subordinate staff do likewise.

- Assessing, planning, delivering and evaluation of patient care in the endoscopic room.
- Ensure effective teamwork by good communication with all members of the multidisciplinary team to enable continuity of care and a safe environment for patients and staff, following local protocols and standards.
- Awareness of the effective management of resources within the department.
- Participate in education, training and development of other staff.
- Ensure all equipment is checked prior to use and any faults reported to the line manger immediately.
- Help to control cross infection by observing departmental policy regarding theatre attire, the maintenance of a clean working environment, decontamination and sterilisation procedures and asepsis.

- Maintain the principles of aseptic techniques in performing surgical scrub, setting instruments, gowning, gloving as needed for each surgical procedure.
- Ensure that controlled drug records are kept in accordance with standard recognised legal and professional practice.
- Ensure the correct counting procedures are adhered to throughout the patient stay in the operating room.
- Supervise the nursing practice of less experienced staff members of the nursing team and participate in the educational aspects of that practice.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Be registered in the General Division of the Register of Nurses kept by NMBI or be entitled to be so registered.
- Basic Life Support Training.
- 2 years Theatre Nursing experience.

We are currently recruiting for a Staff Nurse Endoscopy on a bank/causal contract. To work as a member of a team of nurses in UPMC Whitfield Hospital Endoscopy Unit providing high quality, patient centered care for patients and their families. To develop and maintain good relationships with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and to work closely with nursing colleagues developing innovative practice within the unit delivering evidence-based care. Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
General:
- Mentor new clinical staff and new nonclinical staff. Support and guide all colleagues when needed.
- Liaise with link lecturers from affiliated nurse education departments with particular regard to developing and maintaining UPMC Whitfield Hospital as a recognised Learning Environment for student nurses.
- Develop and maintain effective communication and interpersonal relationships with all members of the multi-disciplinary team to ensure a good team spirit and collaborative working practices.
- Support the unit manager by meeting agreed responsibilities as set out by the Unit Manager, Assistant director of Nursing or the Director of Nursing at any time.
- Maintain high standards of communication, both written and verbal at all times. Have a working knowledge of all ABA publications to include the Scope of Practice Framework and Code of Professional Misconduct.

Title of Job/Grade: Staff Nurse
Reports to: Clinical Nurse Manager or Deputy
Purpose of the Role
To work in collaboration with the Nursing team to ensure excellence in patient care through a well educated and highly motivated team of carers and the effective and efficient use of resources. The fundamental philosophy guiding this position is to promote and preserve the Bon Secours Mission, Values and Ethos.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Practice within policies and procedures, legal requirements, guidelines and standards as directed by the Nursing Department and NMBI. Be familiar with and practice within all policies, procedures and standards set out by the hospital. Provide effective and efficient nursing care by:
i) Planning, implementing and evaluating care given to patients from admission to discharge
ii) Completing nursing assessment care plan and other relevant documentation
- Report verbally and in writing, pertinent patient care information to appropriate nursing/medical staff and other clinical staff.
- Ensure all handover, reports and escalations are carried out using approved ISBAR handover tool.
- Liaise with and cooperate with other departments as required and demonstrate good interpersonal skills.
- Ensure all documentation relating to patient is accurately maintained in the patient's medical records in line with policy and procedures and the record kept in a confidential manner and using only approved abbreviations.
- Comply with the medications policy ensuring that regulations for the safekeeping and recording of scheduling drugs are adhered to at all times.
- Carries out IV Cannulation of patients according to hospital policy.
- Display a professional, courteous and caring liaison with patients and their relatives, staff and all other service users in line with the Bon Secours values.

Overview Of Role
We are currently recruiting for a Staff Nurse Endoscopy on a bank/causal contract. To work as a member of a team of nurses in UPMC Whitfield Hospital Endoscopy Unit providing high quality, patient centered care for patients and their families. To develop and maintain good relationships with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and to work closely with nursing colleagues developing innovative practice within the unit delivering evidence-based care. To develop specialist knowledge of nursing practice relating to Endoscopy.
General
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Mentor new clinical staff and new nonclinical staff. Support and guide all colleagues when needed.
- Liaise with link lecturers from affiliated nurse education departments with particular regard to developing and maintaining UPMC Whitfield Hospital as a recognised Learning Environment for student nurses.
- Develop and maintain effective communication and interpersonal relationships with all members of the multi-disciplinary team to ensure a good team spirit and collaborative working practices.
- Support the unit manager by meeting agreed responsibilities as set out by the Unit Manager, Assistant director of Nursing or the Director of Nursing at any time.
- Maintain high standards of communication, both written and verbal at all times. Have a working knowledge of all ABA publications to include the Scope of Practice Framework and Code of Professional Misconduct.
- Maintain own professional registration and submit to Assistant Director of Nursing for verification annually.
- Develop and maintain a high level of knowledge of the following and always practice within the guidelines and policies written at both unit and Hospital level:
- Clinical risk reporting policy
- Occupational Health
- Facilities Management
- Patient Moving and Handling
- Resuscitation / Basic Life Support
- Health and Safety
- Departmental Financial & Budgetary Controls
- Patient Complaints procedure
- Falls Management programme
- It is the responsibility of all UPMC Whitfield Hospital employees to ensure they are aware of and competent in the reporting of Hospital Risk and all Health and Safety concerns.
- Undertake a pro-active approach in achieving and maintaining accreditation standards within UPMC Whitfield Hospital and have an in-depth knowledge of departmental and hospital-wide policies.
- Develop appropriate IT skills to enable you to work in an efficient manner within the clinical environment.
- Have a working knowledge of Isoft, Lab Information System and all other appropriate systems.
- Continually risk assesses the unit environment to ensure the safety of all patients, relatives and staff members. Report any accidents, incidents or complaints according to Hospital Guidelines and Policies.
Professional Accountability And Development
- Ensure you remain professionally updated and ensure care in all areas is delivered in line with the latest research to promote evidence-based practice. Actively participate in research where appropriate for the benefit of patients.
- Provide a supportive and learning environment in the Hospital, which enables the educational and professional development needs of staff to be met.
- Ensure that statutory rules, guidelines, and legislation are understood and complied with.
- Ensure that standards of care are safeguarded, and all staff are aware of the need for patients and clients. High quality care is recognised as of primary importance.
- Act as a positive role model with regards to the Hospital ethos.
Quality & Audit
- Participate as required in clinical audit and research activity within the field, promoting a positive attitude towards the implementation of evidence- based practice.
- Undertake research/ clinical audit as necessary, critically analyse and provide written reports of the same.
- Participate in local audits in preparation for annual accreditation.
- Work closely with the Quality and Patient Safety team, ensuring the department is meeting accreditation standards at all times.
Health And Safety
- To uphold UPMC Whitfield Hospital's policy requirements in relation to Fire, Infection Prevention and Control and Health and Safety at Work regulations and to attend updates.
- Identify potential risks for all staff, patients and visitors and adhere to relevant incident reporting procedures.
- To observe a general duty of care for the health, safety and well-being of self, work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital, in addition to any specific risk management associated with this post.
Qualifications & Experience
The Post holder must hold the following to fulfil the requirements of this post:
- Be Registered General Nurse with The Nursing and Midwifery Bord of Ireland (NMBI).
- Previous Endoscopy Qualification – desirable.
- At least 1 year's post registration experience – essential.
- Evidence of ongoing CPD.

Overall Purpose of Job
We will provide exceptional patient care in an environment where quality, respect, caring and compassion are at the centre of all we do.
To provide professional nursing skills in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the nursing care for assigned patients to the endoscopy unit.
To provide clinical support and knowledge to patients and staff within the clinical areas in Endoscopy unit.
Participate in the decontamination, traceability and maintenance of endoscopes and other specialist equipment used in endoscopic and non-endoscopic procedures and providing technical assistance during such procedures.
Key Responsibilities and Deliverables
Provides direct care to assigned patients.
To ensure the provision of a high standard of nursing care to patients attending the Endoscopy unit, working within agreed policies and procedures.
Executes physician's orders for all assigned patients; safely and properly administers medications and treatments.
Notifies appropriate nursing and medical staff to changes in the patient's status.
Independently performs duties and assumes responsibility for care of assigned patients.
Performs techniques and routines in the specialty service area.
Performs or assists others to perform proper aseptic techniques, isolation procedures, and infection control measures.
Documents nursing care in all assigned patient records and the hospital Meditech system.
Maintains patient's privacy and confidentiality of information and records at all times.
Evaluates care given including the patient response.
Reassesses and documents the proposed revision of interventions and desired outcomes.
Demonstrates ability to assess patient's understanding of and compliance with instructions and health care teaching.
Reviews documentation of instructions, teaching topics, and patient response with the Nurse Manager or designee.

Clinical Responsibilities
The post holder will be familiar with and adhere to The Professional Scope of Practice Framework (NMBI 2015).
The post holder will ensure:
The patient's needs are individually assessed.
Patients are cared for in the optimum clinical environment, adhering to all nursing and hospital wide policies and guidelines
All documentation is recorded in a professional, legible and timely fashion. Ensuring that confidentiality if respected.
To provide technical assistance during diagnostic and therapeutic Endoscopic procedures, ensuring safe working practice by following agreed guidelines.
Storing, checking and administering drugs including the intravenous route in accordance to hospital policy with formal training.
The admission of patient and recovery of patients pre and post endoscopy procedures. Liaise with medical staff if any adverse changes in the patient's condition or any other aspect of concern.
Communicating with and assisting the multi-disciplinary team to promote excellence in the delivery of patient care within the unit.
To prioritise own workload and that of other staff ensuring that the endoscopy department is managed effectively and efficiently.
Respect patients' dignity, wishes and beliefs: involve the patient in shared decision making and ensure valid consent is obtained before undertaking endoscopic procedures.
To participate in the care and maintenance of endoscopes and other specialist equipment, ensuring an agreed standard of decontamination at all times including accurate records of traceability of all endoscopes and associated equipment.

Managerial Responsibilities
The timely identification and communication of any issues to the Nurse Manager.
Co-ordinating the admission of outpatients, inpatients and patients from other hospitals in conjunction with the nurse in charge.
Demonstrate a confidence and competence in all hospital policies and guidelines
Efficient recording of all necessary documentation.
Effective management of complaints.
Monitoring of risk management processes.
Maintaining an effective interdisciplinary communication process.

Provide feedback to Nurse Manager in the compilation of proficiency assessments for student nurses in the clinical setting.
Contribute to the identification of training needs pertinent to the clinical area.
Identify and contribute to the continual enhancement of learning opportunities in the clinical area.
Participate in the clinical induction of all new nursing and support staff.
Develop leadership ability in order to act as an effective role model.
Assume responsibility for own learning and development needs.
Keep up to date with mandatory training such as Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
Representing the department at meetings, participating in audits, research, projects and being willing to take on the role of a LINK nurse for areas of Clinical expertise.
