The Role
As an Environmental Compliance Officer, you'll play a vital role in
enforcing waste legislation
and
investigating illegal activity
. This role is both investigative and operational, with no two days alike. From carrying out inspections and audits to conducting surveillance and presenting evidence in court, you'll be at the forefront of protecting the environment and ensuring compliance.
You'll work closely with enforcement partners, including Local Authorities, the Environmental Protection Agency, An Garda Síochána, and Customs & Revenue Service, helping to build a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable future.
Key Responsibilities
- Investigate and report on illegal waste activity.
- Inspect and audit waste producers, facilities, collection permit holders, and waste in transit.
- Collect, analyse, and interpret data on waste activities.
- Conduct surveillance (overt and covert) when required.
- Prepare detailed reports, maintain case files, and update management systems.
- Provide evidence in court proceedings when necessary.
- Collaborate with enforcement partners to strengthen compliance efforts.
What We're Looking For
We're seeking someone with
at least 3 years' proven experience in either waste management, investigations, enforcement, or compliance-related roles
. Alongside this, you'll bring strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the confidence to represent findings in formal settings.
Ideally, you have:
- A degree in Environmental Sciences (or equivalent NVQ Level 8 qualification).
- At least 3+ years' relevant professional experience (waste management, investigations, enforcement, or compliance).
- A full, clean driver's licence (Category B minimum).
- Strong analytical, organisational, and reporting skills.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- The ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Environmental Compliance Officer - Based in Dundalk, Co Louth
Working as part of the Environmental Compliance and Planning team on day-to-day basis dealing with matters relating to a number of waste management facilities that the company has in operation throughout the country along with all the environmental, compliance with national and EU Environmental legislation;
The successful candidate will be involved with the following:
- Ensuring compliance with Waste Licences issued by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in Dundalk. You will also service the Cavan EPA licence & Drogheda Facility, reporting back to the Compliance department in Ballymount.
- Implementing EHS policies and procedures across the Group to ensure compliance with regulations and guidelines;
- Carrying out internal and external audits of the Environmental Management System ISO 14001 and Quality Management System ISO 9001;
- Managing the Waste Collection Permit issued by the National Waste Collection Permit Office (NWCPO), submitting permit review application, attending site audits, ensuring compliance with permit conditions, developing and reviewing procedures, updating Vehicle Management System (VMS), liaising with the NWCPO;

- Managing the Environmental Monitoring Contractor, scheduling all sites monitoring in accordance with Licence/Permit requirements, analysing report results to comply with Environmental Limit Values (ELV), communicating with facility managers and arranging collection/testing when necessary;

- Managing all sites on the EPA Web Portal (EDEN) and

- Coordinating the delivery of water quality models and associated modelling reports with 3rd party modelling experts
- Developing detailed project plans, including budgets, schedules, and resource allocation.
- Managing projects from inception to completion, ensuring they are delivered within budget and on schedule.
- Monitoring and controlling project costs, including tracking expenses and managing change orders.
- Identifying and mitigating project risks and implementing effective risk management strategies.
Key Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in environmental engineering or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in water science/engineering,
- Knowledge of deterministic modelling
- Knowledge of environmental surveying
- Proven track record in successfully managing projects of varying complexity.
- Excellent project management skills, including the ability to prioritize tasks, manage resources, and meet project milestones.
