We operate a highly successful groundwater business which operates within our geo-environmental team of c. 100 professionals. We operate nationally across the UK and Ireland and manage several high-profile groundwater frameworks with water utility companies and contracts including the GeoEnergy NI – Geothermal Demonstrator, Northern Irish Private Water Supply Framework, Northern Ireland Water Consultancy Framework and Environment Agency National Borehole Decommissioning Project. Due to our recent success in securing several long term groundwater resource evaluation and implementation projects we have a unique opportunity for an ambitious hydrogeologist to join us and support the management of several Key Client Accounts. The successful candidate will be joining us at an exciting time in our growth and development as a business. This is a consultant or senior position at either Consultant or Senior Hydrogeologist grade (depending on your experience) with a focus on the technical delivery, management, growth and development of our groundwater services.
The successful candidate will be enthusiastic, confident and self-motivated, with strong technical and commercial skills as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills. This position would suit those with an already successful career in groundwater consultancy, specifically in the area of groundwater resource development. Within this role will be given the opportunity to further develop your project management and leadership skills in a fast growing and dynamic consultancy environment.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone interested in providing professional advice in respect of the feasibility, investigation, testing, procurement and implementation of new private and public supplies. Our preferred candidate would have proven experience as a groundwater professional ideally with groundwater resource exploitation experience in the UK and Ireland. They are expected to have a sound technical understanding of the UK and Northern Irish groundwater abstraction regulatory and licensing regime and be able to demonstrate experience in tendering and managing projects of at least £100k+ value.
You will be based out of either our Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Belfast or our Wexford office, but will have the opportunity to work on hydrogeological projects across Great Britain and Ireland, as well as internationally. Other Tetra Tech office locations are available for experienced candidates.
You will need to have a flexible approach to time management and be willing to travel from you home for short periods.
Key Duties And Responsibilities Of The Role
- Complete initial Desk Studies to inform proposed groundwater abstraction location, to assess the required water demand, identify potential well sites and assess their potential for yield, hydraulic efficiency and water quality;
- Coordinate and supervise Field Reconnaissance to fill informational gaps identified in the Desk Study;
- Carry out audits of existing wells, or alternatively, specify and supervise the drilling of trial well(s);
- Specify and supervise pumping tests to verify yield and hydraulic efficiency of trial well(s) and completed production well(s), and preparation of subsequent pumping test report;
- Specify and supervise sampling and testing (microbial and chemical) to verify water quality from trial well(s) and completed production well(s), and preparation of subsequent water quality report;
- Specify, coordinate and supervise activities to assess the potential environmental impact of the proposed groundwater abstraction, and assist in the preparation of abstraction licence application;
- selection of the appropriate trial well(s) for development into full production well(s), or alternatively, specify the precise location for drilling of new production well;
- Act as the day-to-day client interface.
- Conduct site visits for technical assessment and problem-solving based on current UK guidance and best practice.
- Management and technical delivery of Hydrogeological Risk Assessments and Desk Top Studies.
- Site supervision of small to large scale site investigation works, including costing, procuring of work from sub-contractors, soil and rock logging and sampling, scheduling of chemical / environmental and geotechnical analysis, ground gas and groundwater monitoring.
- Logging of soils and rocks to British Standard - BS5930, and Eurocode7.
- Preparation and review of health and safety documentation including risk assessments and method statements.
- Preparation of factual and interpretative desk studies and site investigation reports including production of conceptual site models and quantitative controlled waters risks assessments.
- Undertake and support the design, implementation and interpretation of site investigation data.
- Undertake role of employer’s representative / Supervisor on site investigation projects.
- Checking and review of junior members of staff and support senior staff to ensure delivery of projects.
- Mentoring of junior staff, providing technical guidance and constructive support to aid their development in areas of site investigation, assessment and report writing.
- Liaison with clients, local and wider geo-environmental team members and other disciplines on key projects.
- Input into tenders and preparation of fee proposals.
Essential Skills / Qualifications And Experience
- A minimum of a good honours degree in earth sciences, geology or geochemistry and a master’s degree or doctorate in hydrogeology. The ability to analyse information and to present this logically and accurately in reports or verbal presentations.
- proficient at writing interpretative reports in support of abstraction licence applications for new individual private and public supplies as well as licences for new well fields.
- experience in designing and procuring groundwater abstraction investigations, desk based analysis of pumping test data for confined and unconfined aquifer systems
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft packages including Word and Excel.
- Experience of using pumping test analysis software such as Aquifer Win32, Aquitest and other.
- Excellent communication skills.
- The ability to work as part of a large multi-disciplinary team, as well as being willing to work individually.
- You will need to be a team player willing to work away from your base office, with a high level of personal responsibility and adaptable and flexible approach to different project requirements.
- Full clean driving licence
- The appointed hydrogeologist shall have Chartered status, awarded from the Institute of Geologists of Ireland (IGI), or an equivalent recognised professional body, and shall have a minimum of 7 years’ professional experience in a hydrogeological role. Less experience and non-chartered hydrogeologists will still be considered.
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft packages including Word and Excel;
- Ability to use groundwater modelling packages such as MODFLOW;
- An understanding of water chemistry;
- Water treatment experience to a public supply standard.
- Borehole design, installation and pumping test analysis.

As a geotechnical engineer at AWS, you will lead geotechnical designs for the data centres substations and grid connections that power our AWS DCs in our Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA) geography and impact other projects around the world. As a geotechnical engineer, you will be part of a highly creative and efficient design team comprised of Architects, Engineers, and Designers tasked with solving problems and challenging the status quo. As a subject matter expert, you will have a direct impact on the prototypical design of the facilities, provide technical guidance, solve large scale implementation issues, and be responsible for geotechnical, civil and structural design requirements.

Key job responsibilities
- Management of Geotechnical Design packages for Data Centre Campuses, HV/MV Substation and Grid Connection projects;
- Create, review and release RFP's for external design consultants
- Work within a multidisciplinary design team on developing site layouts during data centre masterplanning design;
- Manage our external CSA Design Consultants through the Design & Construction Administration phases of projects;
- During the Design Phase, act as the Owners Representative ensuring timely delivery, within budget and to the required quality level. This shall specifically include: specification of ground investigation scope, review of civil engineering and earthworks designs; evaluating geotechnical reports and civil engineering design options; review of structural engineering foundation designs;
- Coordinate with internal and external MEP Engineers, Quantity Surveyors, Construction Managers, Technical Programme Managers;
- Lead initiatives aimed at improving cost, quality, schedule, and consistency;
- Develop and maintain the geotechnical and civil engineering aspects of Basis of Design, prototype design and template specifications for Data Centre, HV/MV Substations and Grid Connection project
- Travel for site assessments, design, AHJ and construction meetings.
- Anticipated travel not to exceed 25%.

Basic Qualifications
- Honours degree in Geotechnical, Civil or Structural Engineering from an accredited school and Postgraduate qualification in Geotechnical engineering
- +5 years experience in geotechnical engineering
- Experience in creating, reviewing and approving requests for proposal, bids, designs and documentation.
- Solid working proficiency in AutoCAD and MS Office Suite.
- Proficiency in building codes, regulations, and standards including Eurocodes.;
Preferred Qualifications
- Chartered Engineer or Professional Engineering (PE) license;
- Master's degree in Geotechnical, Civil or Structural Engineering;
- Project Management Certificate
- Experience working in multidisciplinary design teams (Civil, Structural, Architectural, Electrical and Mechanical);
- Solid working proficiency in Civil 3D, Revit and Bluebeam.
- 3+ years experience in the Data Centre or Power/Utility sector;
