Job Description – Home Healthcare Assistant

Dovida Caregivers provide a variety of home care services which support, empower and uplift people, and help them to remain living at home. As a Dovida caregiver, you'll provide essential support to ageing adults and people living with disability in their own homes. These services are person-centred, tailored to clients' requirements, and delivered on flexible schedules.

These services generally fall under four categories:

  • Companionship

  • Home Help

  • Personal Care

  • Healthcare Assistant Duties

Companionship:

Companionship services are those that stimulate, encourage and assist an individual. The primary responsibilities of Companionship services include the following:

  • Providing companionship and conversation

  • Providing stabilisation and assistance with walking

  • Preparing meals and cleaning up meal-related items

  • Providing medication reminders and appointment reminders

Home Help:

Home Help services generally involve light housekeeping, errands or incidental transportation. The primary responsibilities of Home Help services include the following:

  • Performing light housekeeping tasks (dusting, vacuuming, making beds, changing linens, cleaning bathrooms, kitchens etc.)

  • Washing and ironing laundry (Ironing not permitted by HSE)

  • Running errands

  • Accompanying clients to appointments

Personal Care:

Personal Care services are personal in nature and often include assistance with activities of daily living. The primary responsibilities of Personal Care services include the following:

  • Assisting with bathing

  • Assisting with dressing and grooming

  • Assisting with hygiene, toileting and incontinence care

  • Client Moving and Handling

Home Healthcare Assistant Duties:

Home Healthcare Assistant duties are specific to individual client needs; some duties may require additional training supplied by Dovida.

  • Neurogenic Bowel Care

  • Catheter Care

  • Monitoring Pressure Areas and repositioning the Client

  • Medication Administration

  • Support to use therapeutic equipment e.g. Medtronic bike, splints and any assistive technologies

  • Taking blood pressure

  • Detail orientated notes on care provided

Additional Caregiver Responsibilities

These include the following:

  • Reflect the core values of Dovida.

  • Contribute to a positive living environment to enhance a client's quality of life

  • Regularly communicate with your supervisor and office employee

  • Use equipment and supplies as necessary, safely and properly in accordance with internal policies, practices and procedure

  • Report hours of work according to office policy

  • Perform other reasonable duties as assigned

Essential Experience, Skills and Qualifications

These include the following:

  • Full QQI Level 5 Major Award in Healthcare related area

  • Excellent Communication Skills

  • Ability to treat and care for clients and their property with dignity and respect

  • Ability to communicate with clients and family members in a friendly and congenial manner

  • Ability to maintain confidentially regarding client information

  • Requirement to run errands and provide incidental transportation for a client

  • Be consistently highly motivated and enthusiastic

  • Physically fit to carry out demands of the role. Ability to perform manual tasks

  • Ability to work a variety of care visit times, including overnights

Main Responsibilities
Care:

  • Assist Clients in all aspects of their care needs (e.g. Physical, emotional and spiritual). Provide attention when needed, whilst ensuring Clients retain their comfort and dignity.
  • Pay particular attention to assisting Clients who have limited mobility, or physical / Learning difficulties, making the best use of aids provided.
  • Closely monitor Clients who may be confused and / or who have behavioural problems.
  • Assist in the promotion of continence.
  • Assist in the delivery of care for Clients who are dying or who have a progressive illness. Assist with last office
  • Assist in framework of social activities by interacting with clients and helping them continue with hobbies and activities in the care centre.
  • Answer Nurse call system, giving assistance as required. Answer the door and telephone appropriately. Respond accordingly, and pass on messages promptly.
  • Under the supervision and guidance of senior Care Staff, report on the wellbeing of Clients.
  • Carry out regular checks on Clients at intervals determined by senior Staff Members.
  • Make Visitors feel welcome. Provide refreshments / assistance as and when required.
  • Make and change beds, ensuring that rooms are clean and tidy, and commodes are empty, in line with the Nursing Home's disposal of waste policy.
  • Ensure the Nursing Homes resources are used appropriately.
  • Clean and maintain equipment used by Clients / Relatives e.g. wheelchairs, hearing aids, spectacles etc. Ensure the Nursing Home is kept clean and tidy, in line with the Company's attention to detail to philosophy.
  • If applicable, care for clients' clothing and rooms as named, and ensure that all clothing is recorded and clearly marked.
  • Ensure full privacy and dignity is maintained for the dying and the bereaved, in line with the company's policies and procedures.
  • Assist Clients who need help during meal times (be aware of swallowing difficulties, dietary requirements etc.) Assist with serving of food / drinks as requested / required. Wash up as requested / required.
  • Escort Clients travelling to and from the Nursing Home e.g. on social outings, hospitals visits etc.
  • Practice maximum integrity in all dealings with Clients personal and financial affairs, and avoid abuse of the privileged relationship that exists with Clients.
