Job Description
Job Title: Infection Prevention and Control Nurse
Location: Kingsbridge Private Hospital Sligo
Accountable to: General Manager
Salary: Dependent on experience
Hours of work:12 hours per week
Job Summary:
The successful candidate will work as part of the team delivering Infection Prevention and Control. You will have responsibility for implementation of standards for the prevention of infection and for monitoring, investigating, management and control of infections across the hospital. This role provides an exciting opportunity to work alongside our current Group IPC nurse and Patient Safety Nurse and Clinical Department Managers to drive and develop improvements for both patients and staff.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
Chair IPC steering group meetings.
Manage the medical audit platform IPC elements and provide update training for staff when required.
Active completion of IPC audits.
To ensure environmental cleaning is sufficient and appropriate to the level of risk in each rea of the hospital in partnership with the domestic services.
Liaise with Facilities and hygiene managers to assess IPC concerns in relation to general area cleaning, linen, and waste management.
Manage the one together audit tool and Surgical site infection logs.
Create the quality initiative for IPC annually.
Create a retrospective annual IPC report.
Be the point of contact for the IPC Consultant Nurse.
Active role in building and service expansion works in support of the IPC Consultant nurse.
Updating policies and procedures relating to IPC.
Be part of the water safety group (WSG) and attend meetings.
Complete annual augmented care audits in line with JCI & HIQA requirements.
Communication
To communicate effectively within the multi-disciplinary team throughout the hospital.
To co-ordinate patient care and liaise effectively with other disciplines involved.
To always maintain patient confidentiality.
To liaise and communicate effectively with patients and relatives regarding patient care and treatment.
Health and safety
To be aware of the hospital policies and practice in accordance with regulations.
To ensure that hospital policies and procedures are adhered to in relation to IPC good practice.
To support others in maintaining health, safety and security.
To respond to, record and report any adverse events or incidents.
Improve and assess the potential risks involved in work activities and processes for self and others.
To attend annual statutory training in Fire Safety, Manual Handling, Infection Control and Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation training & any other training required.
Education:
To assist with and participate in the in-service training programme (including staff orientation induction programme) to enhance patient care.
Provides mentorship, preceptorship, teaching, facilitation and professional supervisory skills for nurses, midwives and other healthcare workers. Educates patients, clients, families and communities in relation to their healthcare needs in best practice in infection prevention and control.
To maintain and update own professional development.
To supervise qualified and unqualified staff.
Create and provide, with the IPC Consultant Nurse, Group IPC Nurse training for IPC Link Nurses within the hospital.
Aware of regulatory and accreditation requirements, including but not limited to JCI.
Presents information on infection prevention, control and employee health issues in the hospital, nursing orientation and in departments.
Partake in & lead in accreditation IPC processes as needed.
The above list is not exhaustive and additional / alternative tasks may be required from time to time as directed.
Qualifications and Experience required
Essential
- Registered Nurse NMBI
- Be able/willing to chair IPC meetings
- Willingness to learn and acquire new skills
- Insight and understanding of current issues in nursing related to infection control
- Evidence of CPD
Desirable
- IPC post graduate qualification or
- Have worked in an IPC Nurse Role position previously

- Have good prior knowledge of IPC
- Experience of completing audits
