A highly experienced
Principal Instrumentation & Calibration Engineer
is required to join a global Biotech business in
Limerick
. This is a senior engineering position within the
Maintenance & Reliability function
of a leading manufacturing site. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing
technical leadership, subject matter expertise, and regulatory assurance
in relation to instrumentation, calibration, and reliability engineering.

Key Responsibilities

• Own and manage the
  site calibration programme
  , ensuring compliance with health authorities and regulatory requirements.
• Provide
  technical leadership
  across all instrumentation systems, including reliability, equipment obsolescence, upgrades, deviations, and investigations.
• Lead
  reliability improvement programmes
  , analysing predictive and condition-based monitoring data to ensure maximum equipment availability.
• Support
  capital and re-capitalisation projects
  , including equipment specification, selection, and lifecycle management.
• Liaise with
  regulatory authorities
  during audits, representing the site as the SME for instrumentation and calibration.
• Develop and maintain
  SOPs, job plans, and technical documentation
  in line with global engineering standards.
• Deliver training and support to the Maintenance team on new equipment, technologies, and calibration standards.
• Drive
  continuous improvement initiatives
  to strengthen maintenance and reliability programmes.

Candidate Profile

• Level 8 Degree in
  Electrical & Instrumentation Engineering
  (or equivalent).
• Minimum of
  5 years' experience
  in a maintenance or engineering role, ideally within the
  pharmaceutical industry
  .
• Strong knowledge of
  EU directives
  (e.g. ATEX) and relevant
  engineering standards
  (IEC, ISO, NSAI, NEC, etc.).
• Proven expertise in
  leading, developing or rolling out a site calibration programme.
• Excellent communication, report writing, and leadership skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently, influence change, and drive results in a regulated environment.

Responsibilities

• Integrate as part of a large instrumentation Team on various projects as part of a multidiscipline project team
• Analyze complex engineering problems and offer effective solutions
• Provide support to fee and capital budget proposals as required
• Assemble and manage bid, approval, and construction issue Instrumentation packages in an efficient and lean manner
• Mentor Instrumentation engineering staff at junior and intermediate levels, if required
• Check other Instrumentation engineers work for accuracy and quality and undertake peer reviews
• Requires extensive and independent contact with clients, vendor's representatives and project field personnel
• Attend and participate in client and PM Group meetings
• Direct and/or participate in project site visits to monitor, review and sign-off Instrument installations

Qualifications

• Third Level Degree in Instrumentation Engineering or similar discipline
• 10+ years of formal experience in heavy industrial engineering design
• Demonstrable advanced experience in the complete suite of Instrumentation engineering design services. This includes (but is not limited to) Instrument Index, I/O Lists/ Allocation, Instrument Specs/ Data Sheets, Layouts, Cable Containment, Block Diagrams, System Architecture, Atex/ Hazardous Areas, Clean Room Applications
• Proficient in the use of Smart Plant Instrumentation (SPI) & digital project delivery
• Advanced knowledge of all applicable Instrumentation engineering codes, standards and acceptable industry practices
• Commercially aware and have ability to undertake value engineering activities and implement new technologies where they are implemented to provide costs effective solutions for our clients
• Commercially aware on project execution, control of budgets, resourcing and change control
• Multiple office execution experience advantageous
• Strong verbal and written communication skills required with the ability to prepare written specifications and contract documents

Within this role you will be responsible for specifies instrumentation for biopharmaceutical process & utilities systems and supports all aspects of the site calibration program. Evaluates new instrumentation for functional equivalence to existing instrumentation. Supports authoring and maintains configuration specifications & standards for cGMP manufacturing instrumentation.

As a Senior/Prinicpal Instrumentation Engineer, a typical day might include, but is not limited to, the following:

• Understanding of common process & utilities instrumentation including but not limited to load cells, pressure transmitters/gauges, pH sensors, dissolved oxygen sensors, temperature sensors, mass flow meters, UV analyzers, conductivity sensors, TOC analyzers and level sensors
• Evaluating & specifiying cGMP instrumentation for new installations & for the upgrade of existing instrumentation with additional functionality, including instrument components & spare parts
• Being the technical SME for the site calibration program, providing technical guidance to calibrations operations team and supporting regulatory body inspections and audits.
• Evaluating new instrumentation for Functional Equivalence to existing instrumentation that has become obsolete
• Implementing corrective/preventative actions for existing instrumentation
• Working knowledge of process automation control systems.
• Conducting troubleshooting and root cause analysis for complex instrumentation and associated systems
• Creating and maintaining configuration specifications for cGMP manufacturing instrumentation
• Assisting in the design review of equipment, and approved supplier lists for instrumentation
• Reviewing and approval of wiring diagrams for instrumentation & associated control systems
• Preparing engineering evaluations and test plans for change control documentation.
• Writes and executes test plans to demonstrate instrument suitability
• Supervising engineering contractors, may be required
• Maintaining a clean and safe working environment by enforcing procedures, policies, and regulations
• Maintaining company reputation by ensuring compliance with applicable regulatory authority requirements

The QC Instrumentation Validation Engineer will be responsible for the qualification of laboratory instruments and systems used in Quality Control. The role ensures all QC equipment is installed, qualified and maintained in compliance with GMP and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities
:

• Prepare and execute IQ/OQ/PQ protocols for QC instrumentation (e.g. HPLC, GC, UV, TOC, dissolution testers).
