About the role

Overview

The Laboratory Manager will manage Silicate's geochemistry laboratory at NovaUCD, Dublin. This facility provides in-house analytical capacity to the company's enhanced weathering science team. The laboratory includes a custom autotitrator for automated analysis of pH, electrical conductivity and total alkalinity of aqueous samples and an ion chromatograph for measurement of aqueous anions. It also includes a range of soil and aqueous sample preparation equipment (oven, fridges, shaker). 

Role

The Laboratory Manager will carry out sample preparation and analyses for the science team, maintain and calibrate analytical equipment, order supplies, manage a database of sample analyses, ensure quality assurance (QA)/quality control (QC) across all analytical methods, train staff to operate the equipment, write and update standard operating procedures (SOPs) and risk assessments, and ensure that the laboratory meets health and safety standards.

Requirements

Key responsibilities

  • Carry out soil and soil-water sample preparation and analysis
  • Develop and maintain record keeping protocols suitable for a high sample throughput laboratory
  • Maintain, operate, and calibrate a suite of analytical equipment
  • Train staff to use analytical equipment
  • Maintain a database of sample analyses
  • Ensure QA/QC across all analytical instruments
  • Order supplies and maintain a supply inventory
  • Write and update SOPs and risk assessments
  • Maintain laboratory health and safety standards
  • Participate in the processing and interpretation of geochemical data in collaboration with the science team

Required qualifications and skills

  • PhD in relevant branch of the natural sciences (e.g., soil biogeochemistry, low-temperature geochemistry, soil science, hydrochemistry, geosciences), or BSc/MSc with 2+ years of relevant experience
  • Training and experience working in a wet and/or geochemical laboratory
  • Excellent data management skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Adaptability and ability to work flexibly in a dynamic environment
  • Experience with analytical equipment software, especially chromatography software is an advantage

About the job

The Laboratory Manager is responsible for the overall leadership, direction and co-ordination of employees across the Microbiology and Chemistry Laboratories. The Laboratory Manager will manage shift employees to achieve key business objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Management of Laboratory Technicians across both the microbiology and chemistry laboratories

About you

Our client operates an advanced genomics laboratory and supports the generation of multi-omic data sets from various biological sample sources for delivery back to customers in raw data or report format.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prioritise and manage internal workloads to ensure consistent high-quality sample throughput into relevant workflows to meet business demands and collaborator expectations.
  • Plan and monitor daily/weekly work assignments for technical staff to ensure adequate cover and redundancy for the laboratory.

Qualifications

  • Post graduate qualification (MSc/PhD) in Biological Science or equivalent.
  • Project management qualification.

Preferred Experience

  • Previous experience and skills in personnel and project supervision/management.
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of specialised genomic laboratory equipment, including high-throughput/robotic systems, LIMS, sequencing and genotyping platforms.
  • Proven ability to independently establish priorities, perform multiple tasks simultaneously with short deadlines, anticipate and identify potential issues and complete assignments in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible and highly functional in a fast paced, organic team environment.
  • Detail oriented and conscientious, possess excellent interpersonal skills to effectively navigate a matrixed organisational structure, build collaborative working relationships with peers and colleagues across departments and contribute positively to business objectives.
  • Excellent communication skills including written and verbal skills. Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Minimum two years full time work in an accredited high throughput laboratory environment.

  • Maintain and Grow Business: Achieve targets by maintaining existing business and expanding the Allergy & Autoimmune market.
  • Deliver Metrics: Meet company and individual performance metrics consistently.
  • Account Management: Develop and maintain accurate account plans and customer details in Salesforce (SFDC) in collaboration with Marketing, Clinical, and Technical Services teams.
  • Record Keeping: Log all activities and meetings accurately and promptly in SFDC.
  • Contract Negotiation: Lead and negotiate Contracts, including Capital sales, Reagent Rentals, and Service Contracts, ensuring timely execution.
  • Tender Management: Lead tender responses and engage with Managed Service Providers (MSPs), conducting regular site visits and business reviews.
  • Forecasting and Planning: Participate in forecasting and planning activities using TFD tools such as SFDC and Power BI.
  • Customer Support: Conduct onsite stock checks for Cost Per Reportable (CPR) customers.
  • Engage with Key Opinion Leaders: Develop relationships with key opinion leaders across your territory.
  • Market Intelligence: Provide market feedback to Sales Manager, Marketing, and Finance.
  • Effective Communication: Ensure clear communication within all parts of the organization.
  • Compliance: Adhere to internal Quality Processes and CRM standards.
  • Travel: Spend the majority of time with customers face-to-face, with travel expected to be 50-75%.
  • Event Attendance: Attend internal and external meetings and events as required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Life Sciences, e.g., Biomedical Science.
  • Relevant experience in Laboratory/Pathology Sales and/or product portfolio management.
  • Proficiency with Salesforce (SFDC).
  • Strong active listening and communication skills to build trust.
  • Flexible, self-motivated, and well-organized.
  • Teammate with a collaborative attitude.
  • Passionate professional with a proactive attitude.
  • Strong commercial competence to build and develop customer relationships and close sales.
  • Proven negotiation skills and the ability to influence others.
  • Analytical skills and experience working with data.
  • Understanding of business development principles.
  • Dedication to continuous personal and professional development.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel approximately 75% of the time.
