As a Mid-Engineer, you will help shape the fun, educational games that make StoryToys magical. You'll take ownership of key features, write clean and efficient code, and work closely with a creative team to deliver polished, high-performance experiences that delight children around the world. This is a 12 month fixed term contract.
Responsibilities
:
- Develop entertaining, educational mobile games using the Unity engine for multiple platforms, following game development best practices. Our games are played by millions of players young and old.
- Develop quality implementations that are performant, technically sound, and reusable by other developers.
- Produce clean, efficient, and optimized code.
- Be part of a cross-disciplinary team that uses an Agile process.
- Collaborate with designers and UX/UI to get thorough specs and flesh out the best way to get new ideas into the game (Work through storyboards, wireframes, feature specs etc).
- Contribute to estimating user stories and breaking them down into technical tasks.
- Write content pipeline tools and editor extensions to streamline production.
- Work closely with the Art team to get awesome artwork into the games while being mindful of performance and platform constraints.
- Test your own code extensively and work closely with the QA team to resolve bugs and hit sprint goals with a high production quality.
- Write technical documentation as necessary to minimize legacy knowledge.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of software development experience.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience with Unity.
- Minimum of one shipped title.
- Excellent C# skills.
- Excellent debugging skills.
- Great communication skills. While our focus is on product, you will also be capable of writing technical documentation.
- Solid understanding of real-time rendering and rendering bottlenecks.
- Solid understanding how to write low-latency and low-garbage code in C#.
- Fluent in using Git (or Git-like system) and SCM patterns.
- But most of all. You will LOVE creating video games.
Nice to have:
- Familiarity with Objective-C and Java.
- 2+ years of game-dev industry experience.
- Familiarity with Automated Build Systems and Continuous Integration.

- Excellent portfolio of industrial design experience showcasing your skills, thinking, and methodology
- Bachelor's degree in industrial design
- Minimum 3 years professional experience (ideally in consultancy but not essential)
- Fluent and confident with hand sketching and craft modelling
- Exceptional aesthetic sensibility
- Empathetic to user needs, motivations, and behaviours
- Thorough understanding of three-dimensional design and skilled with Rhino/Solid Works and Keyshot (or similar).

The Opportunity
This role is perfect for a passionate individual eager to make a significant impact in backend development, who also understands the critical importance of clear, comprehensive documentation. You'll work alongside experienced developers, contributing to the core logic and services for our cutting-edge AI and API security service, while also playing a key role in ensuring our codebase is well-documented and maintainable. While ideally we are seeking to hire someone directly to the team, consideration may also be given to a contracting opportunity. This is a remote first role and candidates will be considered in Ireland, Finland or another EEA country.
What You'll Do
- Collaborate with developers and product managers to design, develop, and deploy robust and scalable backend services.
- Write clean, efficient, and maintainable code primarily using Python , along with relevant frameworks (e.g., Flask, boto3).
- Actively participate in code reviews, providing constructive feedback and learning from your peers.
- Design and implement APIs and services, ensuring high performance and security for our AI and API security platforms.
- Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for backend services, APIs, and development processes. This includes:
- Writing clear and concise comments within the codebase.
- Developing and updating user stories, technical specifications, and design documents related to backend features.
- Creating guides and tutorials for new team members on setting up the development environment and common backend tasks.
- Contributing to internal knowledge bases and wikis to ensure information is easily accessible.
- Documenting solutions to common technical challenges and best practices.
- Debug and troubleshoot complex issues, identifying and implementing effective solutions.
- Stay up-to-date with the latest backend technologies and best practices, continuously seeking opportunities to improve your skills.
- Contribute to the overall architecture and design discussions for backend solutions.
What We're Looking For
- Experience: Excellent demonstrable skills in Python , data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented programming; along with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, GCP.
- Backend Experience: Proven backend experience of 4+ years designing, developing, and deploying production-grade Python applications.
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, OR equivalent practical experience.
- API Development: Experience building and consuming RESTful APIs.
- Database Knowledge: Familiarity with relational and/or NoSQL databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MongoDB).
- Version Control: Familiarity with Git and GitHub/GitLab for version control.
- Problem-Solving Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to detail in both code and documentation.
- Language: Fluency in English
- Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Proactive and Eager to Learn: A self-starter with a strong desire to learn and grow, demonstrating initiative in understanding and documenting systems.
- Team Player: Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
