Position Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled PLC Programmer with hands-on experience in SICK PLCs and industrial automation systems. The ideal candidate will design, program, test, and maintain PLC-based control systems, ensuring optimal performance, safety, and reliability in our automated processes. This role involves close collaboration with mechanical, electrical, and process engineers to deliver robust automation solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and implement control logic using SICK PLCs and related automation software (e.g., SICK Flexi Soft, SICK Safety Designer, SICK Sensor Integration Gateway).
- Program, test, and troubleshoot PLCs, HMIs, and industrial communication networks (Ethernet/IP, PROFINET, Modbus, etc.).
- Integrate SICK safety systems and sensors (LiDAR, light curtains, encoders, safety controllers) into automation and motion control systems.
- Perform system commissioning, start-up, and on-site support.
- Modify and optimize existing PLC programs for performance, reliability, and safety improvements.
- Create detailed documentation, including wiring diagrams, program flowcharts, and maintenance manuals.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (mechanical, electrical, and IT) to ensure seamless system integration.
- Provide technical support and training for operators and maintenance personnel.
- Ensure all control systems comply with relevant safety standards.
Qualifications
Required:
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation, or related field.
- 3+ years of experience programming and commissioning PLCs, including SICK PLCs.
- Strong understanding of industrial safety systems and functional safety design principles.
- Experience with HMI design, industrial sensors, and networking protocols.
- Proficiency in reading and creating electrical schematics.
- Excellent troubleshooting and analytical skills.
Preferred:
- Familiarity with robotic integration and machine vision.
- Knowledge of SCADA systems or OPC communication.
- Willingness to travel for on-site commissioning and support.

About The Role
As a PLC Programmer / Automation Engineer, you will work from a home office and be responsible for:
- Supporting clients within Ireland and on occasions the UK when needed.
- Spending 20-30% of your time on customer sites (pharmaceutical manufacturers across your territory) with the rest of your time providing automation and troubleshooting support via phone and remote access.
- Corrective maintenance and disaster recovery on Rockwell ControlLogix and Scada Systems.
- System configuration and automation upgrades and amends.
- Operating in a methodical approach to troubleshoot electrical and automation machine failures.
- Completing service visit reports.
- Communicating effectively both internally and externally.
About You
The successful candidate will be based in Ireland and possess at least 2 years' experience programming and troubleshooting PLCs such as Siemens, Rockwell etc.
Candidates must speak fluent English, hold a valid local driving license and the rights to work. My client doesn't offer sponsorship.
You must be comfortable with travel and nights away when needed.
A degree level education is beneficial, but not essential, as is experience working in a cleanroom or sterile environment.
It is, however, essential you have a logical and methodical approach to finding faults and be comfortable with PLC troubleshooting and programming.
